Unit 27 LO3 Documentary Pre Production Planning

LO3 Be able to plan and research a factual programme for television

LIST and DEFINE the GENRE conventions and give examples
(eg docudrama, docu-soap, infotainment, ‘reality’ TV, educational, wildlife, special interest, makeover; magazine; discussion; review; chat show)
Use the Macmillan list as a starter, then EXPAND – COMPARE + CONTRAST

Breakfast television- this is an example of a factual programme, this is one because it includes the following:
·       Weather
·       Interviews
·       News reports
·       Traffic reports
·       Local news
·       Headlines in the newspapers.

An example of this would be Daybreak, which is aired on channel 3, during the week.
This is a typical set up of a breakfast television show.
In the shot, there are breakfast items, cups of tea or coffee and newspapers, these are the stereotypical items that the audience associates with breakfast television.

Chat show- this is an example of a factual programme; this is one because it includes interviews with famous people. They talk about their life, career, and real life experiences.

An example of this would be Loose Women.

Loose women focuses on famous women, talking about their own experiences. They will express their own opinions about the events, which have been in the news recently, and they will also relate the story’s to their lives.
They also bring other famous people on and interview them. They all also sit around a table, the women, genially, sit with a mug of tea or coffee, ready to start chatting.

Documentary- this is an example of a factual programme, this is one because it includes:
·       Interviews
·       Real experts
·       Archive footage (real evidence)
·       Opinions- objective and subjective

Documentaries, tackle various different issues, from the polar ice capes melting, to the worlds ugliest
dog.

This documentary (polar ice capes) tackles a much more serious issue, whereas the worlds ugliest dog documentary is made more for entertainment.

Fly on the wall-
This is an example of a factual programme because it shows real people doing what they do everyday. Audiences may like to watch this because it’s not false and they might like to see other groups of people and their ways of living. An example of a fly on the wall programme would be a series called The Family.
This programme was broadcast on channel 4 and it would show the lives of family’s from different cultures and backgrounds each episode

This is a shot from The Family.

This is a shot from my gypsy wedding

Game shows- this is an example of a factual programme because people answer questions in order to win prizes.
An example of this would be Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Audiences may like to watch this because even though they may not be involved, they can still test their knowledge by answering the questions.
This is the kind of layout, which some game shows may like to use. Game shows are famous for having a theme tune this helps the viewer recognize that it’s a game show.  Here I have added a theme tune for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl4uA9dpuGA

Infotainment- - this is an example of a factual programme because it is about real events, but producers construct it in such a way that makes it entertaining. They tackle many issues ranging from beauty to people getting married.
The first example is a programme called Beauty and the Beast, which is aired on channel 4. The concept of this programme is that they focus on the issue of vanity and deformity/ disability.
This is an image from the show. The audience may like to watch this because they may feel better about themselves or they may feel sorry for one of the people. This is a show to design to highlight the insecurity’s, which we have.

The news- this is an example of a factual programme because it reports real life events. People like to watch this because it’s informative, it also reports the weather.

This is a general set up of the news,
This is how the viewers imagine a new reporter to look like, all smart, sat at a desk and paper around.

Reality TV show- this is an example of a factual programme because they use real life events and use ordinary people, not actors. People will like to watch this because they may relate to the issue. An example of this would be Big Brother. This reality TV shows because it shows real people interacting with each other.
This is a typical reality show because this is what the audience expects it to look like.

Sports cast- this is an example of a factual programme because it shows live sport events that features commentaries from other professional’s. Match of the Day is an example of this.
This is an image of a commentator during the live football match.

Docusoaps- this is an example of a factual programme because it doesn’t have actors; it has ordinary people, with real life situations. An example of this is the only way is Essex’s; this is filmed a few days in advanced before its aired.
